5 Ways to Get Through a Tough Day

It’s natural for any one of us to have bad days.

Bad days are inevitable, but we wouldn’t cherish and savour our good days as much without them. However, many of us force ourselves to turn a bad day into a good one which adds more pressure and stress.

Instead of pressing ourselves to better our days, it is important to accept that difficult days do happen and that things will soon get better.

Now, we understand that acknowledging bad days and accepting them sounds easier than it is. Here are five ways that will help you get through a bad day:

  1. Be gentle with yourself

When you are having a bad day and struggling with something, it’s easy to start making comparisons with others and go down the rabbit hole of self-judgment and criticism. This will make your day even more difficult, and you will end up frustrated and angry with yourself.

Remember, just like you, everyone has a bad day. It doesn’t mean you are incapable, unskilled, unreliable, or make any of those negative thoughts you have about yourself true. Cut yourself some slack! You have gone through so many hurdles and achieved so many things. You deserve to be respectful of yourself and treat yourself with kindness and self-compassion.

  1. Take a break

It is easy not to notice how we are feeling mentally and physically throughout the day. When was the last time you had a break? A good night’s sleep? Or a day where you were your main priority?

If you are tired or lacking energy, days can get even more challenging, especially tough days. Give yourself enough time to recharge; have a self-care day, evenings, or mornings- whatever suits you best to do the things you love the most. Whether it’s sleeping, meditating, reading, or going on a walk, do what recharges you so you can tackle those difficult days in a better state.

  1. Positive distractions

We said it once, and we will say it again, nothing beats a bad day than doing things you love the most.

Cook your favourite meal or treat yourself to your favourite takeaway, listen to your favourite music, arrange dinner with friends, watch your favourite show, or do whatever makes you feel happy and comforted.

  1. Take it slow for the day

Deadlines, chores, traffic, work priorities, and the list goes on and on.

When having a good day, you may feel that you can power through the day without any issues.

However, during bad days, it is important to remember to take it slow and only try to do one thing at a time. Trying to multi-task all will make the situation even worse. If you have to say no, then say no! Prioritise things that only need doing today and leave the rest for tomorrow.

Remember to breathe, move around, take breaks, eat well, and drink enough water. Your health starts from within.

  1. Support network

A long chat with someone can help a lot. It makes us feel lighter, less lonely, and understood. A close friend and family members may even relate to your situation and be able to give you helpful advice or an alternative opinion.
