8 Simple Self-Care Practices

We all know that self-care is crucial when it comes to living a healthy and happy life. Yet, we often put a lot of effort and energy into our work, studies, and relationships, forgetting to look after our mental and physical well being. As a result, we become overworked and burnt out, and eventually, we get to the stage where we are unmotivated or just too tired.

This is why self-care is something we should all practice in our daily lives; this does not only help us feel good but also encourages us to live a more organised and well-balanced life.

The tips below are straightforward and simple ways to incorporate self-care routines into your day-to-day, especially during these stressful times.

Firstly, it’s vital to understand that self-care is not a chore. Don’t treat it like an appointment or a meeting where you schedule “self-care” in your dairy and force yourself to do something you’re not in the mood to do.

It should be something that you like; it should be therapeutic, relaxing, guilt-free and a natural thing. Whether it’s drinking a nice cup of tea whilst reading a good book, meditating, or filling out your daily journal, you should do things that make you feel better.

  1. Find what works for you. There are a lot of tips and pieces of advice out there on what you should and shouldn’t do. We are all individuals with different likes and dislikes; things that work for your friend may not work for you. So, if you find watching a horror movie or rock climbing fun and relaxing as opposed to getting your nails done or having a spa day, do it! It’s all about doing things that you love.
  2. Take care of your body. Have a good diet, good sleeping patterns, and exercise often. Having said that, there is also no need to join the gym and book an intense yoga class straight away, start with simple steps like drinking more water or taking a 15-minute walk around your neighbourhood. The last thing you want to do is exhaust your self and become more tired.
    But remember trying out new things could also be a good change, it’s a chance for you to discover new activities which may just become your new favourite thing to do.
  3. Learn to say no. Don’t feel pressured or obliged to yes to things you just don’t want to do or don’t have time for. You have the right to say no. Make yourself a priority.
  4. Spend some quality time with your pet. Spending time with our furry companion can be a mood booster- have some playtime, go dog-walking or cuddle with them while watching TV. Simple pleasure can go a long way when it comes to our wellbeing.  
  5. Reach out to your close ones. This could mean having long talks whilst having coffee with your friends, going on a family dinner to celebrate, or calling your close friends or family members to express your concerns. Sometimes just reaching and talking about your day helps a lot. Sharing (whether it’s good or bad) is a great way to look after our mental health.
  6. Keep a journal. Sometimes we may have too many emotions and thoughts running through our minds, making us stressed and anxious. Keeping a journal is a great way to declutter our mind. Writing down our thoughts can help us understand how we feel and help us figure out what actions make us feel a certain way, and what aspects of our lives we should prioritise.
  7. Lastly, be kind. Kindness results in positive mind-set; it gives us that warm feeling which makes us and those around us feel good. There are many ways to show kindness; you can listen to those who seem troubled, offer to dog-sit for a neighbour, or smile at someone.

Life can be full of excitement and uncertainties, which can be quite exhausting. To live a happy and well-balanced life, we must remember to pause, take a break and look after ourselves.
